Performance Reviews: A Reality Check You Actually Need

With the world feeling so precarious and unstable these days, do you really need to feel that way at work too?

That’s why performance reviews matter. They provide:

Clarity about how you’re doing and what’s expected of you
Direction on areas for growth and development
Recognition for your work and achievements
Opportunity to reflect and refocus

But here’s the thing: none of that works if the feedback you’re getting is vague or generic. So don’t be afraid to use my two favorite words: “Be specific.” Ask for clear examples and actionable suggestions—because vague feedback isn’t helpful to you or your boss.

Before You Dive Into the Details…

Don’t jump straight into your professional goals and KPIs. Pause first.
Take a moment to reflect on the personal side—your purpose, values, and well-being.
Skipping this step increases the risk of burnout and long-term dissatisfaction.

1️⃣ Review Your Goals

Ask yourself:

  • Does my work align with my purpose?
  • Does my work reflect my values?
  • Does it meet my financial needs?
  • How is my work-life balance?

2️⃣ Build Your BRAG Bag

Your BRAG Bag—a collection of professional and personal wins—should be packed and ready from your last review.

Highlight successes that support your goals, and turn them into BRAGOLOGUES.

BRA·GO·LOGUES (n.): Short, conversational monologues that clearly showcase your value.

Because when you know what you bring to the table, you can sit anywhere.
