I finally got over myself
Last month, I was interviewed for a new podcast called Master Your Mistakes.
The host, Jesse Coleman, is a London-based marketer who interviews entrepreneurs and business professionals — and, apparently, anyone willing to admit their screw-ups. Let’s just say, there’s no shortage of applicants.
When he asked me to share my “biggest blooper,” I said, “There are so many, it’s hard to choose.”
But actually? One came immediately to mind…
For years, I rejected the advice to get serious about social media.
Oh, I dabble on LinkedIn. I have a Facebook page I never look at.
But honestly, I dismissed it.
I told myself:
- “Social media dumbs things down.”
- “My work can’t be squeezed into 60-second sound bites.”
- “It’s not up to my professional standards.”
I was, frankly, a bit smug about it.
Meanwhile, colleagues — gently and not so gently — kept saying: “Get over yourself. Stop being such a prig. Get with the program.”
And finally… I have.
So what changed?
It wasn’t strategy. It was something else entirely.
In this month’s blog, I take a closer look at what changed — and what I had to confront about myself.
