Executions Without Explanation

I’ve been following the controversy surrounding the firings and restructuring at CBS News and its flagship news program, 60 Minutes,  and found the missteps to be universal.

This isn’t really a story about television news. It’s a story about leadership, communication, trust, and what happens when all three begin to unravel.

Because the breakdown appears to have occurred on multiple levels, I’m examining it in two parts: first, the actions of the executives charged with leading the organization through change, and second, the response of employees—particularly Scott Pelley—when that leadership failed to earn their trust.

If Harvard Business School isn’t already preparing this as a case study, it should be. In the meantime, I’ll take a crack at it.
