Be Yourself? But Which One?

I don’t hate the word authentic.

I hate that it’s so overused, oversimplified, and reduced to the kind of cliché you’d find needlepointed on a throw pillow:

Always be you.

Live your truth.

Do YOU!

These aphorisms may be comforting but they’re also incomplete. They assume that each of us has one fixed personality—one “authentic self”—that we should bring into every situation.

But we don’t.

And we shouldn’t.

We’re not the same with a close friend as we are with our boss. Or with our child. Or with a client. Or standing in front of 500 people.

Thank goodness we’re not.

In fact, if we showed up exactly the same way in every situation, that would be inauthentic!

Confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t have.

In this video, I unpack five confidence myths that may be holding you back.

The answer may be closer than you think.
